For 21 years, American publishers, bookstores, libraries, and schools have worked to call attention to the fact that books are under attack every year. This year people throughout the country will observe National Banned Books Week, September 21-28. Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and the freedom to have access to ideas that may be considered unorthodox, controversial, or unpopular. In that spirit, Texas A&M University-Commerce sponsored various events throughout the week, including a guest speaker, a panel discussion on censorship and education, a reading group discussion of banned and challenged science fiction and fantasy, and screening of the video “Howard Stern Is Banned,” as well as several thought-provoking displays. All events and displays were free and open to the public. • Events (including photos) • Displays (including photos) Banned Books Week officially began on our campus with a reception on Monday, September 23, at 11:00 a.m. on the second floor of the J
