What are we doing about exam moderation?
Exam moderation is applied to all Final year papers including 4th year MEng, and to first and second year papers being marked by inexperienced staff. It is as economical of effort as we can make it. The moderator does not have to agree with the method of marking, only agree that it is has been fairly applied without blatant error. The moderator is not trying to reconcile blind double marking, merely agree that the first marker has acted reasonably. If any one mark is changed we have to go through all the papers. We hope to avoid this unless a significant mistake is detected. In order to improve our confidence in the marking of final year papers and to meet the requirements of the University Academic Standards Code of Practice, we have a system of academic moderation by sampling.
