Organic compounds that evaporate easily are called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In addition to contributing to ozone and smog formation, VOCs can have a direct adverse effect on human heath. Many VOCs have been classified as toxic and carcinogenic (cancer causing). Overexposure to VOCs can lead to nausea, dizziness and headaches. Long term exposure to certain VOCs have shown to cause cancer and eventually death.
