What are Uterine Fibroids?
Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus that occur as we age. They are extremely common and as many as 25-35% of women may have fibroids. Some women have them and do not even realize it. Others have problems with extremely heavy periods, abnormal uterine bleeding, frequent urination, back ache, or difficulty getting pregnant.There are many treatment options if treatment is necessary. If there is a single dominant fibroid and you are having difficulty getting pregnant, that fibroid can be removed in a procedure called a myomectomy. If the fibroid is connected to the inside cavity of the uterus and causing abnormal bleeding, this fibroid is often removed hysteroscopically. If you are finished with childbearing, a hysterectomy can be performed either vaginally or abdominally (depending on the womanÕs size).
