They are called dead as all their supposed life-force rests in the horn remaining attached-to remove it in their time would have been a grievous injury they wouldn’t have survived and they aren’t winged. The winged horses to which you refer are the horses like Pegasus from greek mythology. Two different myth sources, I’m afraid.
