What are typical stipends for graduate students in mechanical engineering?
Sources of financial aid vary among our graduate students. The graduate Ph.D. tuition at Duke University is $18,820 per semester, with an additional $580 per semester charged in health fees. The vast majority of our full-time Ph.D. students, however, are supported by research or fellowships funds which fully cover these charges, and additionally provide a generous 12-month stipend ($24,750 per year in the 2009-2010 academic year). While most graduate students can expect to teach a few undergraduate laboratory sections during their graduate studies, we do not ask our graduate students to teach courses. The tuition charges for M.S. students are $1080/unit, with 30 units required for graduation. A continuation fee of $2650 per semester is charged to all M.S. students, as is the health fee ($580/semester). For highly qualified M.S. students, we occasionally offer partial tuition and fee scholarships, and research assistantships are sometimes available. Our average completion time for Ph.D.
