A two-way clause means that the player shall only be paid the full amount of his wages whilst he is in the NHL team. When he is moved down to an affiliate team, he will only be paid a small part of his wages. A way of temporarily reducing the wage budget is by sending down to your affiliate teams any players with two-way contracts.
