What Are Tropical Rainforest Tree Rings?
Overview Tree rings are annual cell layers produced by trees and shrubs which can be used in dendrochronology, the science of using tree rings to analyze patterns of growth and other processes in a forest. Dendrochronology can be applied to several fields, including archaeology and climatology. Tree Rings Tree rings typically consist of thin-walled cells that form early in the growing season, called earlywood, and thick-walled cells formed later in the growing season, called latewood. One annual tree ring, usually extending around the entire circumference of the tree, consists of the cell layer from the beginning of the earlywood to the end of the latewood.
