What are Tropical Plants?
Tropical plants are plants which are native to the tropical regions of world. Thanks to the consistent climate conditions in the areas where these plants evolved, tropical plants have a number of very specific adaptations which make them very unique. Many people in tropical and subtropical regions like to use tropical plants in landscaping, and tropical plants are also kept as houseplants and conservatory specimens all over the world, with especially distinctive examples fetching very high prices from specialty purveyors. Although all tropical plants have developed to live in the warm and very humid environment of the tropics, these plants are quite diverse. Some, for example, are designed for life in the understory, with large leaves to capture sunlight and dripping water, brightly colored flowers to attract birds in the dimly lit conditions of the understory, and sturdy roots which are accustomed to very rich soil. Well, as far as I’m concerned, they’re plants that emanate from a tropical region. These are the plants that will only grow in warm climates like north of the northern New South Wales coast. And I’m hunting around in this garden for a few of my tropical favourites. These are the ones that you southerners can only drool over. How would you like to grow this one? It’s Dendrobium speciosum. It’s native to eastern Australia and it’s a true tropical beauty. When it’s in full bloom, those flowers are magnificent, they just drape down. This one’s growing in a pot, but in its natural habitat it grows in the fork of trees in the rainforest. It’s an epiphytic plant; in other words, it gets all its nutrients from the rainfall and from the air that surrounds it. They naturally occur in subtropical and tropical rainforests, so if you want to grow one yourself you will have to recreate that rainforest environment where there’s a bit of shade but light and there’s also humidity.
