What are Tributary Strategies?
Tributary Strategies are river-specific cleanup plans, detailing the “on-the-ground” actions needed to reduce the amount of nutrients and sediment flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. These strategies will evolve over time to chart the most effective course to a clean Chesapeake Bay. When all 36 strategies are added together, cleanup plans will be in place in every part of the Chesapeake Bay’s 64,000 square-mile watershed. And for the first time, will aim to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution coming from the Bay’s headwaters in Delaware, New York and West Virginia. The Bay states and the District will develop and implement “best management practices” to minimize pollution, which include: planting new riparian forest buffers, upgrading sewage treatment plants, managing farm nutrients and storm water runoff to accelerate the restoration of the Bay and its rivers.
