What are Transitional Services for LEP/ELLs in CR Part 154?
Each school district shall ensure a smooth transition for former limited English proficient students transferring from a bilingual or free-standing English as a second language program into an English mainstream program. Instructional and support services such as Academic Intervention Services (AIS), content area support, ESL instruction or regular consultation between the ESL teacher and mainstream teachers may be included. Transitional services shall be provided for the first year after the student is placed in the English mainstream instructional program. (CR Part 154.3)(2)(i) (14KB) Before transitional services are provided, LEP/ELLs should always have the opportunity to participate in magnet schools, gifted and talented, and other special programs as well as participating in after-school programs for language enrichment. LEP/ELLs should also be able to participate in bilingual vocational/career awareness programs; they do not have to wait until transition.
