Those images, which contain strange looking characters that you must retype, are there to prevent people from using automated software to access the site and its features. People use this type of software, commonly known as robots, to automatically scan through various websites and fill out the forms with the intention to either gain access to user accounts or post spam across the site. Since only a human can read and retype the characters in these images, the robots will not be able to access the features.
