What are those tall towers near light poles in Carolina Beach?
They look like giant microphones. And in a sense, they are. Those odd-looking towers you see on Pleasure Island are public alert notification sirens for Progress Energy’s Brunswick Nuclear Plant, which is located across the Cape Fear River in Southport. The one pictured above is one of six in New Hanover County. Five are on Pleasure Island, and one is just across Snow’s Cut Bridge.
