Asian weapon MA tend to be somewhat conservative with sparring. Some weapon arts don’t spar AT ALL. Your best bet would to look for a Historical European Swordsmanship tournament and ask if you could participate using your jian or dao, which are pretty close to arming sword and messer/falchion, respectively. The WMA/HES crowds are usually willing to mix it up with anyone who shows skill and control, since there’s a heavy emphasis on being able to you know, FIGHT in most of their fechtschulen/salles. I’ll cross blades with anyone, any time, provided they’re not a total thug with no control whatsoever. Sparring isn’t a real fight… the purpose is to LEARN, not beat the everliving crap out of someone. 🙂 But I do like to win.
