What are the Year 2000 problems found in computer programs?
Much source code is unavailable, missing, or lost. Some is in the hands of vendors who retain it in their possession. Some vendors have gone out of business. Some software can t be found because of poor software management. Estimates of missing source code range from 3% all the way up to 40% for an individual firm. Without source code, it is impossible to fix non-compliant code. Some dates may already be stored with four-digits. In some cases 19 has been hard coded in the date field. Many programs do not apply the full leap year rules that say that years divisible by 400 are leap years! A date field may be used for purposes other than dates. Computer users may have stored dates in fields that were not supposed to contain dates, and other data in fields that were suppose to contain only dates. The purpose of some date handling logic in programs is unclear. Installed programs have usually gone through many poorly documented or undocumented modifications and adaptations. This complicates
