What are the windbreak renovation techniques?
Links in this section are to video clips unless otherwise noted. Because windbreak effectiveness depends so much on density, many of the renovation techniques are designed to increase or decrease density. Those practices designed to reduce density achieve that goal quickly. Increasing density takes time. Some techniques may change the density in only the bottom of the windbreak, or only the top. Some of the work can be done with simple hand tools or power tools, while other practices require large equipment and skilled operators. This component provides a discussion of the different renovation techniques, plus clips from the video Windbreak Renovation, produced by North Dakota State University. The seven techniques are thinning, row removal, pruning, supplemental planting, sod release, coppicing, and root pruning. They may be used singularly or in combination.
