What Are The Wild Horses Of The Camargue?
The Camargue Nature Reserve in the south of France is home to many different and rare bird species but it is also famous for its wild horses. These attract thousands of visitors to the region each year. French zoologists believe that they are thte last surviving descendents of the Stone Age horses of Solutre. The horses are semi wild and are usually white, although there are also some darker individuals. The horses have roamed France for centuries with the Camargue bulls that also live within the protection of the nature reserve. The national reserve, like many others in the world, are places of protection but are still open to exploitation. Herdmen of the area sometimes break in and ride the horses, which is not too bad as the horses tolerate humans well but unscrupulous businessmen take the Camarge bulls to Provence bullfights where they are teased without killing, for entertainment.
