Mahabalipuram is not one of the Buddhist sites. Mahabalipuram is on the East Coast. Many of the rock carvings at M’puram are submerged in the sea, as some of them were reclaimed in the wake of the recent Tsunami. I do not know whether Ajanta and Ellora suffered the same fate. Ajanta and Ellora are, I think, cave paintings. Their degrading could be due to the efflux of time and also partly due to the vandalism of the people. They are unlikely to be lost due to floods or tsunami. The paintings are to be reclaimed with the same natural painting materials, for which certain agencies are said to acquired the expertise. Vandalism of such rare paintings have to be visiting with stringent punishments. As regards the preservation of the Mahabalipuram rock carvings, a lot of efforts are required to be taken to reclaim the lost structures from under the sea bed. May be the Government have to approach the UNESCO for reclaiming the important historical structures which have gone under the sea, like
