What are the VLT´s primary mirrors made of?

0

The VLT primary mirrors are made of a special glass-ceramic with almost no thermal expansion, called Zerodur, which has an opaque-beige appearance. The reflective surface is a layer of aluminium only 80 nanometres thick. If we were to scale the mirror to the diameter of the Earth, this aluminium layer would still be only 12 cm thick.
