Artificial satellites are used for sound and video communications (such as DirectTV), living (such as the Space Lab) and for astronomical exploration (such as the Hubble Space Telescope). By the way, anything that orbits the Earth is considered its satellite. Anything other than the moon is an atrificial satellite. Because of this, the uses for artificial satellites are as broad as your imagination.
