The latest move by Microsoft to block XBOX users who have “chipped” their console to their online gaming experience, is quite effective. You won’t be able to stop piracy at home since you always have people who will outsmart you. However, you can take measures on those parts of the value chain you control. Also, you should take measures to make it “difficult enough to prevent the average user from illegally copying. As for MP3 downloads etc, stopping piracy will be next to impossible. Artists would be well advised to focus on sources of revenue that cannot be copied, like giving live concerts. In a way, this would be similar to Microsoft’s strategy to focus on the elements you can control, and worry less about the areas that are beyond you. Look at the success of iTunes, e.g.: by offering additional experience to their customer base, they are able to create a huge market, despite the fact that music is notorious for being shared.
