What are the universal precautions for health-care professionals in specimen collection?
“Universal precaution: all blood and blood products and bodily fluids are potentially capable of transmitting disease to an exposed health-care professional”. As a precautionary measure, one must use double gloves, lab gown, face shield/mask and goggles during specimen collection or when handling blood, blood products and/or bodily fluids of patients. Sharps like scalpels and needles must be double-bagged and disposed of properly using standard disposal procedures followed by the health care facility.
