WHAT ARE THE UNITED NATIONS INTER-AGENCY GAMES ?
The United Nations Inter-Agency Games were initiated by UNESCO in 1968 to create a forum for exchange where staff members of the agencies and organizations of the United Nations family could meet to get to know each other through sports events, thereby strengthening working relations and promoting mutual understanding. Responsibility for the Games lies with a Control Commission (composed of two representatives of each participating organization) which establishes the General Rules of the Games and the Competition Rules of the sports disciplines. Since 1968, there has been an increasing momentum ; disciplines have increased from 5 to 14 and the number of participants from 350 to around 1000 from more than 10 organizations and agencies of the United Nations (UNO, UNESCO, WHO, FAO, UNIDO, UNICEF, WIPO, IAEA, WFP, ILO etc.).
