What are the unique benefits to the different types of woods?
Oak and birch are the most popular and affordable woods. Oak has a more predominant grain pattern and easily absorbs stain, creating a uniform finished product. Oak is known for its strength and hardness. Birch has a softer grain pattern, which allows for versatile coloring. Birch can be treated with a clear stain, can be painted with a color to replicate a more expensive wood (i.e. mahogany or cherry) and can be painted a solid color easily (i.e. white or black). Cherry is a closed-grain board, which means that it is smooth to the touch, unlike oak. Cabinets made in cherry create a timeless look for any room. Ash is not as often used, but creates a dramatic look from the fibrous grain of the wood. Ash is known for its strength. Brazilian cherry, with its dark red tone, appears to look similar to a traditional mahogany, and creates an elegant look for a sophisticated room. Maple is known for its hardness and closed grain, creating a smooth feel to the touch.
