What are the types of white blood cells and what are their major functions?
Neutrophils are typically the most numerous type of white blood cell. They are slightly bigger than red blood cells and contain a multi-lobed nucleus. Neutrophils are sometimes called polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells because of their odd-shaped nucleus that looks like a piece of popped popcorn. Neutrophils are generally responsible for fighting bacterial infections. They are capable of phagocytosis (eating other cells). Band cells are immature neutrophils which are produced quickly during an infection.
