What are the two white sockets located on the opposite side of the board from the I/O area?
These are Voltage Regulator Module sockets or VRM sockets. The VRMs regulate the voltage going to each processor and its cache. The E8000 server board has one 12V VRM integrated onto the server board, the other two VRM sockets can be populated with either 5V VRMs or 12V VRMs depending on the power supply used. Different power supplies require different mixtures of these VRMs. The Cabrillo-C server chassis comes with two additional 12V VRMs for use with the E8000 server board while the E8000 reference chassis integrators kit comes with two 5V VRMs and one 12 V VRM for maximum flexibility. Consult the Intel support web site for a white paper with an explanation of how to choose which combination of VRMs will work with your power supply.
