What are the two most common causes of acute bacterial conjunctivitis, and how are they usually acquired?
It is difficult to say, but Staphylococcus aureus is probably the most common, followed by either Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. They are all normal nasal or nasopharyngeal flora, and frequently get into the eye on a person fingers, especially following or during an upper respiratory viral infection when you are frequently blowing your nose.
