What are the two major standards regulating the safe use of human materials and pathogens in the laboratory?
The two major standards are: • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Standard • The CDC-NIH Guidelines entitled ” Biosafety in Microbiological and Biological Laboratories ” (BMBL). The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard is a federal law, enforced by PEOSH for NJ State institutions. The purpose of the standard is to eliminate or minimize occupational disease caused by employee exposure to pathogens in human blood, tissue and other body fluids. The BMBL The BMBL details safety precautions for work with biological materials in laboratories. The BMBL Guidelines were developed for research laboratories but also apply to clinical labs. According to the BMBL, laboratories must use Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) practices and procedures when handling human blood, blood products, body fluids, tissues and human cell lines because of the potential of infectious agents. Note: The NIH also has published Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules . Appendix B of this document has an extensive l
