What are the triggers for orthorexia?
No one really knows the cause or trigger for why someone becomes orthorexic. In my experience and in talking with other professionals, we have often found that a strong desire to prevent or treat a disease, particularly a nutrition sensitive disease such as heart disease or diabetes, can cause some to follow an obsessive diet. Sudden unexpected diagnosis or even death of a loved one can lead some to orthorexia. Other triggers may include need for control, fad diets, a spiritual need and/or status. Talking about the latest diet and competing with others to see who can be the most “pure” are not uncommon traits in those seeking status or superiority through diet.
