What are the tricks to drawing a good caricature?
Kylie, WA Tony Bramwell makes his living from drawing caricatures for various publications. He also keeps the crowds amused and entertained at various functions where he draws a punter every few minutes. Although Im highly skilled in many areas, drawing isnt one of them and I was keen to know if I could be taught. [Tony] Like any hand and eye skill some people show more aptitude than others, I maintain that if you can sign your own name you can be taught to draw. If I look at somebody when I have to draw them from a caricature point of view I look and think is the face square, round, long, thin and so on, one of the things that I have to incorporate into the drawing. [Pete] and accentuate I presume? [Tony] Yes, but not to the point where the exaggeration is out of control because if you lose the relativity between eyes, nose and mouth, which is effectively the focus of the face, if you lose that you lose the caricature. The recognisability of the subject is very important. [Tony] Child
