What Are the Treatments for Seizures in Canines?
• Step 1:Effective treatment begins with accurate observation of symptoms by dog owners. If your dog’s seizures occur less than once a month, you may initially do nothing more than look for a possible worsening of symptoms. In some cases, this worsening never occurs and further treatment is unnecessary. However, if your dog has seizures once or more per month, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Be especially alert for signs of even mild seizures that happen multiple times in a 24-hour period. This type of clustered seizure may indicate life-threatening abnormalities in your dog’s brain, and you should treat its occurrence as an emergency. If you own a St. Bernard, German shepherd, golden retriever or Irish setter, even infrequent seizures will become more difficult to control over time, so consider seeing your vet before more serious problems develop.
