What are the treatments for mitral valve regurgitation?
Although several medications may be helpful for other heart conditions, there is no prescription drug therapy that is helpful for mitral valve regurgitation alone. For severe regurgitation the best therapy is mitral valve repair surgery. This surgery usually involves repositioning of the mitral leaflets to correct the leak. Because the function of the left ventricle can be affected by removing the mitral valve, in general mitral valve repair surgery is preferred over mitral valve replacement with a mechanical or tissue artificial (prosthetic) valve.
