The fungus initially appears as black spots on the leaves and progresses with larger spots ringed in yellow on both sides of the rose leaves. Eventually the leaves die and fall to ground, compromising the entire rose bush. New leaf growth is most vulnerable to blackspot. Treating the fungus is part prevention and part proactive activities such as deadheading spent flowers and cleaning garden debris.
