What are the top priorities for nutrition research to reduce obesity in children?
Perhaps longitudinal studies, focused on the effects of “Healthy Start” programs, are needed with not only traditional foods, but also new foods, but nutrition research alone can not solve the problem. Behavioral research is necessary as well. We need to think out of the box to help solve this problem and borrow successful intervention strategies from other areas and disciplines. * What is the available evidence that FDA can look to, in order to guide rational, effective public efforts to prevent and treat obesity by behavioral or medical interventions, or combinations of both? Look to “lessons learned” from other disciplines focused on behavioral change (for example, the NCEP campaign or tools/messages used in conveying environmental principles to children). Remember imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and borrowing good ideas is never incorrect. * Are there changes needed to food labeling that could result in the development of healthier, lower calorie foods by industry and t
