Frequently we will be asked about using money from one fiscal year for work covering more than a 1 year period. The answer would depend on the type of funding. 1 or 2 year money needs to be obligated (i.e. put on contract within that stated period) but most if not all the funding put on our contract has a multi-year billing/disbursement capability. Once the funds are obligated to the contract we typically have 5 years to fully disburse the funds. Some may go longer but 5 years is the norm. Here is a link to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) website. The link provides several tables indicating when funds/appropriations expire broken out by service, funding code, and department code. This is a good resource in determining how long funds are available for disbursement. If you have any questions, please call the CBRNAIC.
