What are the Three Rs of Recycling?
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Recycling is better than throwing something in the trash, which fills our landfills with wasted resources. Reusing an item before discarding it extracts more use value from the energy and materials embodied in the product. Ninety percent of the environmental impact resulting from the production of a product, including depletion of non-renewable energy and resource reserves, waste generation, and pollution, occurs before the product reaches the retail shelf. Reducing waste before it happens avoids these impacts.
