What Are the Three Different Types of Diabetes?
• Type 1 Diabetes This type usually occurs in children, teenagers, and young adults. The immune system destroys the pancreas and prevents the body from making insulin. Insulin injections are required to treat Type 1 Diabetes. • Type 2 Diabetes The most common form of diabetes can develop at any age, often occurring in people who are overweight. The body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use all of the insulin it makes. Initial treatment usually includes oral medications, along with diet and exercise changes. • Gestational Diabetes Pregnancy can create a shortage of insulin in some women. Although gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, the mother is at higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes later in life.
