Best-selling author Tom Clancy asked for a chronological accounting for four books from the original domestic contract signing advance payment through to the most recent payment to date. The report was to include all domestic and foreign signing advances and publication royalties listed by payment type and date. He needed this information in exactly seven days. This information could not be extracted from the accounting system and organized in Excel, so I created a spreadsheet for each book in order to list each payment type and amount in order. By comparing the hard copies of previous payments against a printed computer history of payments issued I was able to collate the backup in order of payment date and fill in any hard copy gaps with the information listed on the computer print out.
