What are the tests like?
Heartland uses a computer-adaptive testing system from American College Testing called COMPASS. Although testing is done on a computer, computer expertise is not required. Directions are clearly stated, and help is always available. The tests are adaptive, which means that questions are selected based on responses to previous questions. Since the tests are highly individualized and tailored to the student’s level, the tests are shorter than with traditional paper and pencil tests.
The tests are there to ensure that the data collected is scientifically viable and that the research we are carrying out is the best available. The tests are designed to make sure that you know the different species that you will be researching. We have some practice tests so you’ll be familiar with all the different species before you get out to Fiji.
You must take a different test for each job title for which you apply. There is no standard “civil service” exam. The examination may be a written (multiple choice, or true/false) test, oral examination, practical skills (such as typing) test, a training and experience rating or a combination of these types. The type of exam for each position is stated on the blue-colored job announcement, and on the Internet listing. Sample test questions for some written examinations are available from the Human Resources Department. The sample tests may be of help in preparing for the examination. Generally, examinations are scheduled during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.
Each HeadMinder test consists of a set of computerized subtests that require simple patient responses on a standard keyboard and measure aspects of cognition typically associated with a brain dysfunction, such as reaction time, concentration and working memory, information processing speed and accuracy, and short-term and long-term memory. Tests may also include questionnaires tailored for each presenting problem. By combining the subtest modules in specific arrangements, HeadMinder can create customized test batteries to meet pharmaceutical or other research needs and develop new protocols to test for specific central nervous system conditions. How does the HeadMinder system work? As a registered provider, you will be given a Login ID and secure password, which give you access to your personal HeadMinder Administration pages.
