What are the Terra Nova Tests?
The Terra Nova is an achievement test which is administered to all students in grade two and three. This year, the test will be given during the weeks of May 14 and May 21. The first part of the test measures reading comprehension, language expression, vocabulary, and word analysis. The test asks students to construct meaning, to think critically, and to respond to text. The mathematics portion calls for critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. The test allows students to solve problems using different strategies. Authentic materials such as newspaper clippings, and blueprints for buildings are used and tools such as rulers and pattern blocks are provided. The Terra Nova not only provides the district with important information, it also familiarizes students with the reading, writing, and math skills necessary for success on the grade four New York State exams. Second and third graders’ performance on the test will be shared with parents in the fall. Should you have any quest
