What are the teacher qualifications for high school ESOL?
Teachers assigned to teach ESL or ESOL I, II courses in high schools are required to have ESL endorsement or an ESL permit. Teachers who provide the English I, II, III, IV credit must also be certified in English. ESL certification is not required of teachers who teach the content subjects to ELL students; however, the use of ESL methods is required for teachers who teach content subjects to Beginning students. The use of ESL methods for content subjects is recommended, yet optional, for teachers of Intermediate, Advanced, or Transitional level students. Training for content teachers on ESL methods may be requested through the Office of Bilingual/ESL.
