Usually SmartMedia cards should be delivered with a title label, which is folded and stuck to the profile at the bottom of the SmartMedia card. The circular tabs are used to stop accidental erasure/overwriting of the card (similar to the switch found on a floppy disk). On the front of the Smartmedia card is a circular indentation. Apply a tab to the centre of this indentation if you want to write protect the card. Simply remove the tab if you need to write to the card again.
