Symptoms include: • diarrhea or stomach cramps • nausea • vomiting Travellers’ diarrhea does not usually last long (3-4 days). How is travellers’ diarrhea treated? Replace lost water and nutrients, especially in children and the elderly to prevent dehydration. Fluid replacement: Try one of the following: Store-bought solution (example: Gastrolyte-from a pharmacy) Throw away after: -12 hours at room temperature – 24 hours in fridge Home-made solution Mix: 5 mL (1 tsp.) salt + 40 mL (8 tsp.) sugar + one litre bottled/treated water You can add lemon or lime juice. You can also try: • canned juices, carbonated drinks, purified water or clear salty soups • starches (noodles, rice, potatoes) • cereals • pasteurized yogurt • fruits that can be peeled • cooked vegetables Avoid drinks with caffeine, dairy products, prune juice, orange juice or apple juice.
