What are the symptoms of travelers diarrhea?
Nausea, vomiting, borborygmi, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea begin 12 to 72 h after ingesting contaminated food or water. Severity is variable. Some people develop fever and myalgias. Most cases are mild and self-limited, although dehydration can occur, especially in warm climates. Traveler’s diarrhea usually begins abruptly while traveling or shortly after you return home. Most cases go away in three to four days, without treatment. Ninety percent of cases clear up within a week. However, you can have multiple episodes of traveler’s diarrhea in one trip. Most episodes of traveler’s diarrhea occur in the first or second week of the trip. Symptoms vary depending on what organism causes the problem, but most people experience diarrhea, as well as fatigue, decreased appetite and abdominal cramps. Nausea and vomiting also may occur. Usually there is no blood in the stool (feces).
