What are the symptoms of scurvy?
Scurvy affects a person’s level of energy. Most people with scurvy will show signs of depression, exhaustion and just general weakness. They tend to lose weight because of a lack of appetite. The lack of appetite and weight loss can lead to anemia. Many symptoms of scurvy appear in and around the mouth. A person with scurvy may have bleeding gums, swollen and discolored gums and loose teeth. Scurvy also affects the joints and muscles of the lower region of a person’s body. They may see black and blue discoloration on their thighs and legs. Their body can ache. The person’s legs may become swollen and their joints may become enlarged. Arthritis can also strike the joints. Because of the problems with their legs, muscles and joints, a person may experience partial immobility. Because the person’s system is weak, they are prone to thinning hair, fevers and a slow recovery process of any wounds.
