What are the symptoms of ammonia poisoning?
Since ammonia tends to affect the gills first, gasping is one of the first things you’ll notice. Fish may gasp at the surface where the oxygen level is greatest, or lay on the bottom, conserving energy but breathing heavily. You may also see them holding their fins tight against the body, scratching against objects in the tank, or if you spot the problem late, you may notice that they have succumbed to disease.
