What Are the Symptoms of a Gangrenous Gallbladder?
Gangrene in the gallbladder, although difficult to diagnose, is a very serious condition that is considered a medical emergency. A gangrenous gallbladder can easily rupture and spread infection to the intestinal tract or throughout the abdomen. The diseased organ can also leak bacteria and toxins into the blood, spreading these substances to distant areas of the body in a process called septicemia. There are over 500,000 surgeries performed in the U.S. each year to remove infected or damaged gallbladders.
