What are the Suomi Schools (also called the Finnish Saturday Schools)?

0

The first Finnish Saturday School in the United Kingdom was established in London in 1972 at the instigation of the Finnish Church Guild. The purpose of Suomi-Schools is to advance education in the Finnish language, Finnish affairs, history and culture. The schools promote bilingualism within British-Finnish families. Children are normally taught in groups divided according to age (from ca. 3 to 16). Some schools also have toddlers’ groups. Usually lessons take place every other Saturday during term times. Finnish classes are available also to adult students. Currently there are 15 Suomi Schools operating in the United Kingdom and well over hundred of them world-wide. The schools receive financial support from the Finnish Department of Education. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………….
