What Are The Stones Of Avebury?
The Stones of Avebury are actually the largest known ‘stone circle’ in the world and are located at Avebury in South West England. It is comprised of an outer ring and two inner circles. The tallest stones are over 20 feet high. Thirty six stones are now standing, but it is estimated that at least four times that many were originally placed there. The exact origins or reasons for the existence of Avebury’s stones are a mystery. However, like Stonehenge it is thought that it was a sacred site, particularly to Druids, who probably used it to have religious and sacred rituals there, including sacrifices. It is a magnificent piece of work to have achieved the capacity to have stones as high as twenty feet last upright for centuries. Given that it is thought to have been established over 4,500 years ago the effort and diligence going into such a feat, cannot be overestimated.
