What are the steps to Sainthood?
The local church investigates the candidate’s life and writings for evidence of heroic virtue. The information is then sent to Vatican. Pope John Paul 2 simplified things by abolishing the process involving a DEVIL’s ADVOCATE, whereby a canon lawyer deliberately tried to poke holes in the candidate’s case and declare the miracle a hoax. This vetting reduced the number of canonisations. A panel of theologians and the cardinals of the Congregation of the Cause of Saints evaluate the candidate’s life. If the panel approves, the Vatican proclaims the candidate is VENERABLE or a role model for Catholic values. The penultimate step is beatification, when the candidate is given the title of BLESSED. This means the person is responsible for a posthumous miracle. CANONISATION is the final step. The halo of sainthood is pinned on only when the second posthumous miracle is recorded and ratified.
